Frequently Asked Questions

I submitted the "contact us", why haven't I been contacted yet?

If you didn't submit a request for a tutor, you will not be contacted to schedule a tutor. PLEASE Click the "Request a Tutor Here" to fill out the google form to request a tutor.

When will I be assigned a tutor?

As soon as you submit your request for a tutor, NHS officers will work on finding you a tutor as soon as possible. Tutors could be assigned within 3 business days if members are readily available, however, if no tutors are available, NHS officers will let you know within a week.

How long is a tutoring session?

Tutoring sessions are typically 1 hour, but you can work with you tutor in choosing a length of time that works best for both of you. Please note that NHS members only need 2 hours per month, so if you require additional hours, you may be asked to compensate the tutor at their going rate.

My tutoring availability changed, how can I update my original response?

Contact your tutor directly. If you have not been assigned a tutor, please email penhighnhs@gmail.com and CLEARLY and EXACTLY describe what change you need to make, whether it is changes in time slots, change in free period, number of times requesting to be tutored per week, change in courses needing tutoring in, etc.

What if my tutor does not show up to a scheduled tutoring session?

If your tutor does not show up without giving you a notice, please contact the NHS officers at penhighnhs@gmail.com so that we may address this problem with them. If the problem still persists, we will find you a replacement tutor.

The NHS officers may periodically check with you and your tutor to make sure that neither party is failing to show up at scheduled tutoring session without prior notice to the other.

When and where will I meet with my tutor?

After being assigned a tutor, your tutor will contact you and will work with you in setting up a schedule of what days and times will work best for the both of you as well as discuss where would be most convenient for you both to meet. The first meeting may be in Mrs. Borstel's room (S10) at lunch or in a classroom/library with an adult to verify the tutoring session. The subsequent meetings must take place either on school grounds or at one of the Palos Verdes libraries where an adult can confirm the tutoring session took place.

How are tutors selected?

Once a student requests a tutor, NHS officers will match the student with a tutor who matches the student's need in terms of subject and days/times available. If multiple NHS members are viable candidates to be matched with the student, the NHS officers will choose a qualified tutor randomly.

For students who request to be tutored more frequently, the NHS officers may designate two or more tutors to the student.

Does the PVPHS NHS give tutoring services to middle school students?

No, at this time, PVPHS NHS does not offer private tutoring services to students outside of Peninsula High. Occasionally, Pen Students will go to the Middle Schools to help tutor as requested.

Can I have more than 2 hours of free tutoring per month?

If a tutor is willing to tutor more hours for free, they can, however, after the 2 free hours, the tutor may ask for compensation for additional hours.  If you need tutoring in a different subject, you can submit a separate request and we will try to find a 2nd tutor.
